“Just Us” by Bria Fields

He was the boy that I wanted

Cool, beautiful, damaged.

Our first conversation was lightening striking an old tree

No one could see us

No one could ever see us

Our wrongs made each other brighter

But nothing was right

We were woven together like deeply buried roots

But we separated like gauze on torn flesh

And I can still feel the pain from that sometimes

I miss him, but even more than him

I miss us

I miss wanting someone

feeling jealous

getting hurt in the middle of the week after getting blown off

the joy of discovering something new about someone who brought fire into my veins

how good I felt when I was with someone whose name made me smile

the pain of the moment I knew it was over

all of it

I miss all of it

but not him, just us
