Mimi’s “What Are We Really Afraid Of?”

Fear is so much more than being afraid of the dark, horror movies, evil villains, and monsters under the bed. As we get older, the things that scare us change; and some end up being scarier than any of the things that I previously mentioned. They may not look or sound as scary as the things that terrified us when we were kids. But they are real and cause a lot of pain and heartache to those who suffer at the hands of it.

I actually found this quote that describes exactly what I mean. It deals with the fear that pretty much comes with growing up and becoming an adult. It was written by Cutrice L. Williams. What fear do you feel cripples you or stops you from living the life you’ve dreamed of?

“You miss out on so much when you’re afraid…
Afraid to take that leap of faith,
Afraid to stand up for yourself,
Afraid to change,
Afraid to commit,
Afraid to be alone,
Afraid to tell the truth,
Afraid of falling and being told no,
I can’t stand that unhealthy fear,
That fear that cripples growth,
We must recognize we are greater
than it is and so much more is on
the other side of it.”

That quote really hit home for me. I have been letting my fears hold me back for years. I’m not exactly sure what specific thing or person helped me get over some of those things, but I can tell you that it helped to have a lot of support from trusted friends and family. You also have to learn to be your own fan too, though.

Everything comes down to believing in yourself and knowing that you can do anything you put your mind to it. Once you do that, put the work in to get where you want to be in life. If the people you are currently around don’t support you, don’t worry about them. The right people will come along once you start your journey. You’ll be amazed at the kind of amazing people that you meet when you follow your dreams.

Lastly, don’t feel bad about having fears. Let those fears push you to overcome them and you will become stronger for it. Take it all one day at a time, one step at a time. Go at your own pace, not anyone else’s. Everyone is different and everyone’s journey is different so do what’s best for you.

I’m here for you and I believe in you,

~ Mimi
